Spring Events Blossom in Overland Park

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — As the weather warms and flowers bloom, Overland Park is brimming with seasonal events and activities aimed at families and art enthusiasts alike. From art exhibits to a popular children’s farmstead, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
The Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is set to host its annual photo contest, inviting participants to capture the natural beauty of the gardens. With categories for both youth and adults, winners will receive $50 awards. Submissions are due by May 1, 2025, and the winning entries will be showcased at the LongHouse Visitor Center from May 5 to June 21, 2025.
Art lovers can also celebrate the legacy of renowned watercolor artist J.R. “Jim” Hamil at a free exhibit showcasing his work from March 4 to April 30. Hamil, who documented the beauty of the Midwest for over 50 years, has several original pieces and prints available in the gift shop.
“Jim’s art has brought charm to countless homes and solidified his status as one of the Midwest’s most prolific artists,” said a spokesperson for the arboretum.
Another notable exhibit features the works of self-taught artist Jhulan Mukharji. Running from March 24 to April 27, Mukharji’s art explores color and form, inviting viewers to engage in reflection. Sales from this exhibit will benefit local charities, adding a philanthropic twist to the artistry.
Beginning April 1, the Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead opens its doors for the season, welcoming families to enjoy hands-on activities, live entertainment, and over 250 animals. The farmstead promises a memorable experience with baby goats ready for visitors to bottle feed.
April 1 also marks the first Tuesday of the month, which is “Free Admission Day” at the Arboretum. Families can participate in craft projects themed around “Nature Crowns” with supplies offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
On April 2, children can enjoy a free program filled with music, stories, and puppet shows at the arboretum. Each month, new performers will provide entertainment for young ones, creating a space for laughter and joy.
Earth Day Cleanup on April 5 invites community members to volunteer in restoring the beauty of Overland Park’s parks and waterways. Participants will help collect trash from local streams and parks, contributing to the health of the environment.
The community also has the chance to learn more about local hazards and disaster preparedness through presentations in April. These sessions will cover topics such as creating emergency plans and recognizing severe weather signs.
As a start to new initiatives, a family-friendly gathering will celebrate upgrades to Maple Hills Park on April 21, featuring a new playground and other enhancements awarded by the American Institute of Architects Kansas City.
Additional events throughout the month include the Spring Plant Sale at the Overland Park Arboretum, community forums on the Fair Housing Act, and opportunities for residents to rid themselves of unwanted items during the Recycling Extravaganza on April 26.
“Spring is a great time to engage with the community and enjoy all that Overland Park has to offer,” said a city representative.
