December SSI Payments to be Issued Early: Here’s What You Need to Know
The December Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments will be issued earlier than usual, with beneficiaries receiving their checks or direct deposits on November 29, 2024. This adjustment is necessary because December 1 falls on a Sunday, and the Social Security Administration does not distribute payments on holidays or weekends.
Millions of Americans, approximately 7.5 million, rely on SSI payments, which are designed to support individuals with debilitating disabilities that significantly impact their income. The payment amounts vary based on the beneficiary’s status: individuals can receive up to $943, couples filing jointly can receive up to $1,415, and essential persons can receive up to $472. These amounts have increased by 3.2% due to inflation since last year.
It is important to note that SSI payments are not connected to regular Social Security benefits. Beneficiaries who receive Social Security payments do not automatically qualify for SSI, and vice versa. Recipients can use the SSA calculator to determine their specific payment amounts.
This early payment means that SSI recipients will receive two payments in November, one for November and the other for December. This is a common occurrence when the first day of the month falls on a weekend or holiday.
In addition to the early December payment, beneficiaries should be aware that Social Security and SSI payments will increase by 2.5% in 2025 due to the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). This increase will help beneficiaries keep up with expenses as inflation continues to evolve.
