Stanford’s CJ Williams Aims for Historic Fourth Straight 100-Yard Game

STANFORD, Calif. — Stanford receiver CJ Williams is on a remarkable trajectory as he prepares for a critical game against Florida State on Saturday night. After enduring a slow start to the season, the sophomore has emerged as one of college football’s most productive receivers.
Williams, who previously played at Wisconsin, earlier recorded just eight receptions for 62 yards in his first three games with Stanford. However, since then, he has become the first Stanford receiver this century to achieve three consecutive 100-yard receiving games, amassing 27 catches during this impressive stretch.
“Don’t ride the wave,” Williams said, reflecting on his journey. “The situation is never going to be perfect or ideal. Still love the game of football and be grateful for being out there.” His attitude has been crucial as Stanford grapples with a challenging season, currently standing at 2-4.
In the lead-up to the matchup against Florida State (3-3), Williams has the chance to join Troy Walters and DeRonnie Pitts as the only players in Stanford history with four straight 100-yard receiving games. The kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on ESPN.
Interim coach Frank Reich has implemented a pro-style offense following the dismissal of former coach Troy Taylor. Quarterback Ben Gulbranson, who transferred from Oregon State, also has played a significant role in Williams’ resurgence.
During the Cardinal’s last game against SMU, they struggled with penalties and turnovers, leading to a disappointing 34-10 loss. Despite his team’s efforts, Williams felt frustrated by their performance. “I’m mad, you know? I mean, the whole team’s mad,” he said. “We just can’t make that many mistakes.”
Stanford will host Florida State at Stanford Stadium, where it has secured two wins this season. Williams expressed excitement at playing the Seminoles: “Everybody knows what Florida State is about. It’s cool to get the opportunity to play those guys.”
Florida State has been struggling in the ACC, losing eight consecutive conference games. Meanwhile, Stanford aims to correct its mistakes and capitalize on its home advantage as Williams looks to extend his impressive streak.
