Steelers Defense Dominates Offense in Camp Scrimmage

LATROBE, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense shone brightly during Thursday’s practice, dominating the offense in a scrimmage drill. In just their third day of padded practices, the defense took control in the Seven Shots segment, securing a 6-1 victory over the offense.
Veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers struggled significantly during the session, finishing 0-for-3. His attempts were thwarted, including two incomplete passes aimed at tight end Jonnu Smith and receiver Ben Skowronek. In another play, Rodgers narrowly escaped what would have been a sack, rolling out to throw the ball away.
The offense’s luck didn’t improve in the goal-line drill, also suffering from the defense’s relentless pressure. The only touchdown came when Rodgers connected with tight end Darnell Washington, while the defense celebrated another strong showing, again dominating with a 6-1 victory.
“That’s what we’re expected to do,” outside linebacker Nick Herbig said. “We’re the Pittsburgh Steelers. We’re the Steel Curtain.”
Despite the bright spot provided by Rodgers’ connection with Washington, fans are wary as concerns grow regarding the offense’s effectiveness. The Steelers’ running game struggled last season, averaging only 4.1 yards per carry, a statistic bolstered by attempts to improve their offensive line.
Fans may cling to optimism about Rodgers’ experience and leadership. The 2025 squad, while not expected to rely solely on the quarterback to carry the offense, must find a running game they can trust as they prepare for the September 7 opener against the New York Jets.
Rodgers’ connection with newly acquired DK Metcalf has yet to develop into the long-range threats offensive coordinators hoped for. Although he did manage to connect with Metcalf on a deep route during practice, most of his completions have come via short passes. This emphasizes the need for the offense to stretch the field further.
“Defenses will definitely game plan to shut down Metcalf,” wide receiver Calvin Austin III noted. “Someone else has to step up to create that chemistry with Aaron.”
On the injury front, left tackle Broderick Jones faced concerns after being sidelined, missing a significant chunk of training camp with a groin injury. Meanwhile, the team welcomed back several players who had been recovering from injuries, emphasizing a crucial phase of training.
“We have a lot of work to do as a unit to regain our strength and cohesion,” Jones stated.
The coaching staff is pleased with the recent performances of rookies Jack Sawyer and Derrick Harmon, who have shown promise in their first NFL training camp. Harmon has made an impression with his pass-rushing skills, demonstrating potential in future game scenarios.
With the regular season approaching, the Steelers will need both their offensive and defensive lines to shore up to optimize play and compete at the level of past championship teams.
