Strangers Trilogy Update: Chapter 3 May Arrive Early Next Year

LOS ANGELES, CA — Fans of The Strangers film series can look forward to an early 2024 release for the next installment, according to director Renny Harlin. While Harlin confirmed that The Strangers: Chapter 3 will not debut this year, he hinted at a potential release window, saying, “I would say that early next year is what it’s looking like.” This news comes shortly after the release of The Strangers: Chapter 2, which premiered in theaters on September 26.

Harlin expressed enthusiasm about the trilogy’s unique production process, which allowed for an in-depth exploration of the characters within a compressed time frame. He stated, “It goes into a very, very dark place. It’s an incredible privilege for a director to be able to tell this kind of a full story.” Harlin explained how the series aims to show a significant change in the main character, who evolves from a frightened victim to a more complex figure by the end of the trilogy.

The Strangers film series began with the original 2008 film, which saw significant box office success. Its sequel, The Strangers: Prey at Night, was released a decade later. The new trilogy kicks off with The Strangers: Chapter 1, which delighted fans upon its release in 2024. Harlin’s films will retain the same eerie atmosphere as their predecessors, centering on a young woman targeted by a group of masked killers.

Despite anticipation for The Strangers: Chapter 2, critical reception has been mixed, with the film earning a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes of just 17% from critics. While it grossed $7.7 million during its opening, it has yet to recoup its $8.5 million production budget. Chloe Petsch, who stars in the film, shared her feelings about the divisive nature of the movie, stating, “I’m proud of my performance… The films are polarizing, and that’s what makes art interesting.” She described a standout scene in Chapter 3 as one of her best performances on screen.
