Strawberry Moon June 2025

NEW YORK, NY — Sky-watchers should mark their calendars for June 11, 2025, when the annual Strawberry Moon will make a spectacular appearance. This full moon, characterized by its warm amber hues, is considered the last full moon of spring and the first of summer.

The Strawberry Moon will peak at 3:44 a.m. EDT on June 11. However, the ideal time to view it will be at dusk on June 10, shortly after sunset, particularly in the Southeast U.S. The unique timing of the moonrise means viewers in New York can expect to see it at 8:30 p.m., while those in Los Angeles should look for it around 8:00 p.m.

The name “Strawberry Moon” originates from the Algonquin tribes in North America, which recognized June as the month for strawberry harvesting. Other cultures have given different names to this phenomenon, such as the Blooming Moon or Honey Moon.

This year’s moon will be particularly striking, as it’s expected to be the lowest full moon in decades. According to stargazing experts, a phenomenon called the Major Lunar Standstill—occurring every 18.6 years—will influence the moon’s trajectory, making it appear exceptionally low over the horizon.

As the moon rises, it will occur near the bright red star Antares. This will allow those in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific to witness the moon occulting, or blocking, Antares in the sky.

For the best viewing experience, experts recommend finding a dark location away from city lights, ideally from an elevated position with an unobstructed view of the eastern horizon. The moon will appear larger and more vivid when low on the horizon due to atmospheric effects that bend light.

Stargazers looking to capture photos of the Strawberry Moon should allow their eyes time to adjust to the low light and consider using binoculars or a telescope for a closer view of lunar features.

As June’s Strawberry Moon approaches, local astronomy groups and websites will provide further details on the best viewing tips and times.
