BANGKOK, Thailand — A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Thai capital on Friday, causing buildings to sway and prompting the evacuation of residents. The tremor hit around 1:30 p.m. local time, with the epicenter located in central Myanmar, approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of the city of Monywa, according to the U.S. Geological Survey and Germany’s GFZ center for geosciences.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), a relatively shallow depth which typically leads to stronger surface shaking. The greater Bangkok area, home to over 17 million people, experienced alarm systems activating across high-rise apartments and hotels as residents were forced to navigate down staircases to safety.

In the aftermath of the quake, many took to the streets, seeking shade from the midday sun while waiting for the all-clear. Despite the powerful nature of the tremor, which sent water splashing from swimming pools in high buildings, there were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. Local authorities are urgently assessing structures across Bangkok to ensure public safety.

Witnesses described the scene as unsettling. “It felt like a strong shake, and everything in my apartment began to tremble,” said local resident Somchai Prakob, who lives on the 15th floor of a condominium. “We were all scared and rushed outside.”

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential impact in Myanmar, which is currently facing a civil conflict. As of now, there are no reports of damage or casualties from the neighboring country. Emergency services are on standby in both Thailand and Myanmar, prepared to respond should the situation escalate.

Regional experts have noted that earthquakes of this magnitude can trigger aftershocks, and residents are urged to stay alert and prepared. With recent geological activity in the region, monitoring efforts have intensified. Authorities continue to provide updates to ensure the safety of all residents.
