Surge in Misogynistic ‘Your Body, My Choice’ Comments on Twitter Following Trump’s Election Victory
Following Donald Trump‘s victory in the 2024 US presidential election, there has been a significant rise in misogynistic comments on social media platforms, including Twitter. The phrase “your body, my choice” has been co-opted by some individuals to mock and undermine the original feminist slogan “my body, my choice,” which was a rallying cry for reproductive rights.
The phrase, popularized by white nationalist podcaster Nick Fuentes, has gained widespread attention and criticism. Fuentes posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Your body, my choice. Forever,” which has been viewed millions of times and has sparked a wave of similar comments across various social media platforms.
According to researchers from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD), there has been a 4,600% increase in mentions of the terms “your body, my choice” and other misogynistic language on X in the days following the election. These comments often target women and supporters of women’s rights, reflecting a broader trend of increased online harassment and hate speech.
Women on Twitter and other platforms have reported being threatened and harassed with comments such as “your body, my choice” and other derogatory remarks. This surge in online misogyny has led to concerns about the safety and well-being of women online and the broader implications for women’s rights in the wake of Trump’s election victory.
The rise in these comments is seen as part of a larger permission structure where some individuals feel emboldened to express misogynistic views more openly. This trend is particularly alarming given the existing threats to reproductive rights and the potential for further restrictions under the new administration.
