Suspect Arrested After Arson Attack on Tesla Collision Center in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Paul Hyon Kim, a 36-year-old man, was arrested on Wednesday, March 27, after a targeted arson attack on a Tesla collision center in Las Vegas that took place on March 18. Police reported that the attack caused significant damage to multiple vehicles.
Authorities stated that Kim faces 15 counts, including arson, destruction of personal property exceeding $5,000, and possession of an explosive device. He is expected to appear in court on Thursday afternoon.
During a press briefing, LVMPD Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren confirmed that hundreds of personnel were involved in the investigation that led to Kim’s arrest. “We have a more comprehensive understanding of what happened,” Koren commented, emphasizing the collaborative effort between local and federal law enforcement.
According to police reports, Kim arrived at the Tesla facility in a black Hyundai Elantra before approaching the building on foot. Dressed in black clothing, he concealed his face and damaged surveillance cameras with a rifle. Video footage inside the facility captured Kim allegedly spray-painting the word ‘RESIST’ across the entrance.
Investigators believe Kim used Molotov cocktails to ignite the fires, which damaged five Tesla vehicles. Following the incident, he reportedly fled the scene in his vehicle. “This was a targeted attack against a Tesla facility,” Koren stated, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, along with the FBI Las Vegas Special Agent in Charge Spencer Evans, coordinated efforts to canvass over 700 locations in search of the suspect. “The seamless collaboration to keep Southern Nevada safe is unparalleled,” Evans remarked, adding that Kim may also face federal charges due to the nature of the crime.
Kim’s social media activity has come under scrutiny, with police noting his involvement in groups advocating for Palestine and communism. Authorities plan to continue examining his online presence. Evans condemned Kim’s actions, stating, “There’s nothing courageous about firebombing and terrorizing your local community. At the end of the day, you and you alone will face the prison sentence.”
Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community. He also indicated that officials are investigating whether Kim’s actions are linked to similar incidents involving Tesla in other cities across the United States.
This incident occurs amid increasing reports of vandalism and protests related to Tesla’s operations, partly fueled by controversies surrounding CEO Elon Musk’s collaboration with the previous Trump administration.
As this story develops, authorities are urging anyone with information related to the attack to come forward.
