Ava Moore Kayaking Grapevine Lake

GRAPEVINE, Texas — An 18-year-old woman was killed in a jet ski accident while kayaking on Grapevine Lake on the evening of May 25. Authorities have arrested two suspects in connection with her death, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on May 27.

Ava Moore was struck by a jet ski operated by Daikerlyn Alejandra Gonzalez Gonzalez, who fled the scene with an unnamed male accomplice. The passenger on the jet ski remained at the scene to talk with first responders, according to the Grapevine Police Department.

Gonzalez and the man, both reportedly in the United States illegally, were located soon after and arrested. They are suspected of committing a hit-and-run incident after leaving the scene of the initial collision, which led to another vehicle being struck.

<p“My heart breaks for Ava’s family and friends, and my prayers are with them as they face this tragedy,” Paxton said in a press release. The Attorney General’s office is coordinating with local, state, and national law enforcement agencies to secure justice for Moore.

The incident occurred near the shoreline of Oak Grove Park, where the jet ski was reportedly traveling at a high speed. A witness described the event as tragic, noting Moore was wearing a life jacket.

Moore was pronounced dead at a local hospital. She had recently completed her first year at the U.S. Air Force Academy Preparatory School and was described as an outstanding student and athlete.

A fundraising campaign initiated to assist Moore’s family has so far raised over $32,000, exceeding its original goal. In a statement, Air Force Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind expressed condolences, recognizing Moore’s leadership qualities and impact on her peers.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are appealing for the public’s assistance. More than 900 tips had reportedly been received by law enforcement regarding the case.
