Syracuse Residents Prepare for Heavy Lake-Effect Snow This Weekend

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The City of Syracuse has issued a snow safety alert ahead of heavy lake-effect snow expected to begin tonight and continue through Friday night. The National Weather Service (NWS) has declared a lake-effect snow warning for several counties including Onondaga, effective from 4 p.m. Thursday.
Forecasts indicate that total snowfall could reach between 6 to 12 inches, with some areas experiencing snowfall rates of an inch per hour. As conditions deteriorate, residents are warned that travel could become very dangerous due to significantly reduced visibility and potential wind gusts reaching 40 to 50 mph.
Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh emphasized the importance of preparedness for all residents. “Syracuse is no stranger to winter’s challenges,” Walsh said. “While we are well-equipped to handle the snow, I encourage everyone to remain cautious and follow parking regulations to facilitate snow removal.”
The snow safety alert advises drivers to be ready for hazardous road conditions and reminds them to adhere to alternate-side parking regulations. This ensures that plow trucks can effectively clear city streets. Residents are also urged to remove snow from sidewalks and ensure paths to fire hydrants are clear.
Despite ongoing salt shortages in the area, Mayor Walsh confirmed that the Department of Public Works has maintained an adequate supply to manage the upcoming storm. “We will continue to monitor our salt supply to ensure the safety of our roads,” he added.
For real-time updates, residents can check the City’s Snow Safety page and follow @SYRCityline on social media. Seasonal odd-even parking restrictions will also be enforced in designated downtown areas, with signage posted to inform residents.
The NWS has warned that road conditions may be slippery and advises the public to monitor forecasts closely for updates on the winter weather situation. “Plan on difficult travel and be cautious on the roads,” the NWS alert stated. “Take steps to ensure safety and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions.”
