Syracuse Road Crew Heat Safety

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Road crews in Syracuse are working hard under extreme heat conditions as they prepare to mill and repave Green and Lodi Streets.

The work began on June 24, 2025, amid soaring temperatures. City officials are prioritizing worker safety by providing ample water and promoting strategies to cope with the heat.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has offered guidelines to protect workers during these hazardous conditions. One key recommendation is the ‘20% rule.’ This guideline suggests that on the first day of heat exposure, workers should limit their full-intensity labor to 20% of their shift to help them acclimate.

In addition to the ‘20% rule,’ OSHA advises employers to provide cold water and allow frequent rest breaks. Workers are also encouraged to wear hats and light, loose-fitting clothing. Signs of heat illness, such as fainting, dizziness, nausea, and muscle cramps, should prompt immediate attention.

For more information, a complete list of OSHA’s recommendations is available on their official website.
