The Tamil film industry has witnessed an unexpected success with the children’s drama ‘Vaazhai,’ which has turned into a surprise hit despite featuring no prominent star cast. Directed by Mari Selvaraj, ‘Vaazhai’ has reportedly grossed over Rs. 30 crores at the Tamil Nadu box office alone, and more than Rs. 40 crores worldwide. This remarkable performance underscores the potential for mid-range productions with strong content to succeed at the box office.

The movie’s performance is a beacon of hope for films without major stars, which could now consider theatrical releases instead of opting for direct-to-digital platforms. ‘Vaazhai’ is now available to a wider audience via Disney Plus Hotstar, streaming in multiple languages including Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, and Bengali, complete with English subtitles.

Released just a week before the anticipated film ‘The GOAT‘ starring Thalapathy Vijay, ‘Vaazhai’ faced tough competition. Despite this scheduling challenge, its earnings exceeded expectations, suggesting that if launched during a less competitive period, the film could potentially have crossed the Rs. 50 crores mark.

The ensemble cast mainly consists of debutants Ponvel and Raghul in lead roles, with Kalaiyarasan, Nikhila Vimal, J. Satish Kumar, Dhivya Duraisamy, Janaki, Priyanka Nair, and Nivedita Rajappan in supporting roles. The film’s music was composed by Santosh Narayanan, adding a notable element to the film’s overall appeal.
