TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — A double shooting in Taylorsville early Wednesday afternoon has prompted multiple schools to enter secure protocol as police investigate the incident. Two individuals were wounded in the shooting, which appears to be drug-related, according to West Valley City police.
Gunfire erupted just before 11:30 a.m. near 3860 Burningham Drive, where police found one victim outside Taylorsville Elementary School and the second individual was later dropped off at a nearby medical center. Both victims were quickly transported to a hospital for treatment, with at least one undergoing emergency surgery.
West Valley Police Lt. Steve Katz stated, “We’re still trying to ascertain what exactly happened here. It appears to be drug-related.” Investigators are also questioning a minor linked to the incident, but specifics about their connection have not been disclosed. Officers are examining a vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting.
In light of the shooting, the Granite School District placed ten schools on secure protocol, meaning no outside activity was allowed, and students, faculty, and staff remained inside with locked doors. The schools affected included Taylorsville Elementary, Fremont Elementary, Granger Elementary, Vista Elementary, Plymouth Elementary, Eisenhower Junior High, West Lake Junior High, Granger High School, and Taylorsville High School.
Granite School District emphasized that there is no threat to the schools or the community and that the secure protocol was enacted purely as a precaution. “These incidents are not suspected to be related to the school in any way, and the protocols have been issued out of an abundance of caution,” the district communicated to parents.
As of noon, most schools were released from the hold protocol except Taylorsville Elementary, which remained under lockdown status. The district urged parents not to come to the schools during the investigation, assuring that updates would be provided as more information became available.
