Teacher Charged with Assaulting Disabled Child in West Virginia

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. — A West Virginia elementary school teacher has been charged with assaulting a disabled child under her care. Patricia Lynn Summerfield, 56, of Charleston, faces serious allegations following a report that prompted immediate action from school officials.
According to court documents, Summerfield is charged with the unlawful physical harm of a disabled child. The Kanawha County School District confirmed she is employed at Holz Elementary School and provided a statement regarding the situation.
“A report was made to Holz administrators on Tuesday about a possible incident with a staff member,” the district stated. “School administrators took all appropriate action per KCS policies. At this time, the district is unable to comment further because state law prohibits discussing issues related to personnel.”
Summerfield’s bond has been set at $75,000, and she is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on April 10.
The case has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of students with disabilities. Advocates emphasize the need for vigilance in monitoring classroom environments to prevent such incidents.
“Children with disabilities are often vulnerable, and it is imperative that their caregivers provide a safe space,” said local advocate Jamie Lawson. “We must ensure that justice is served and that such behavior is addressed promptly.”
As the investigation unfolds, parents and community members are left seeking answers about the safety measures implemented in schools to protect their children. Ongoing updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
