Teen Shot Dead at Memphis Food Festival: Authorities Seek Suspect

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A shooting at the Foodee Fest food truck festival in Tom Lee Park claimed the life of a teenager Sunday evening. Memphis Police Department reported that the incident occurred around 6:46 p.m., just as the festival was concluding.
The victim, believed to be approximately 15 to 16 years old, was found unresponsive at the scene and pronounced dead shortly after police arrived. Authorities are investigating and suspect a fellow juvenile was involved in the shooting.
Investigators faced challenges in reaching the crime scene due to the large turnout at the festival, with food trucks obstructing parts of Riverside Drive. Lt. Col. Gary Badgett of the Memphis Police Department expressed condolences, stating, “First and foremost, our thoughts go out to the victim and their family and everyone affected by this senseless act of violence.”
The suspect has been described as a Black male, possibly a juvenile, wearing black clothing and a ski mask. Police have concentrated their investigative efforts near the park’s welcome center and restroom areas.
Witnesses recounted the chaotic moments when gunfire erupted. Ernest Sampah, a vendor from Georgia attending the festival, shared, “I was working at my stand and I heard gunshots. Maybe four times. Then I saw people running up and down. I tried to hide under my table. It was very scary.”
Despite the shock of gun violence occurring in a public space, Lt. Col. Badgett reassured the community that Downtown Memphis remains safe. He urged anyone with information to reach out to CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH.
The morning following the shooting, Memphis Mayor Paul Young addressed the tragic event, calling it “heartbreaking, infuriating, and absolutely unacceptable.” He continued, stating, “Sunday’s shooting at the Foodees Food and Culture Festival marks the end of a week filled with far too many acts of lawlessness and violence in our community.”
In his statement, Young condemned the violence that disrupted a community celebration, emphasizing that the city’s parks should serve as safe, welcoming spaces for all. He highlighted that the event organizers had opted not to utilize security services, stressing that police had been present nearby and responded quickly.
Young reaffirmed the city’s commitment to prosecuting violent crimes to the fullest extent, promising that those responsible for mayhem in Memphis will be held accountable. “We will continue doing all the hard work necessary to make Memphis stronger and safer,” he stated.
As investigations unfold, the Memphis community is left to grapple with the tragedy of a life lost amid a celebration meant for joy and connection.
