Teenager Sentenced to Life for Brutal Murder of 17-Year-Old in London

A teenager has been sentenced to life in prison for the shocking murder of a 17-year-old boy, who was brutally attacked before being pushed into a canal. Elijah Gokool-Mely, aged 18, was found guilty of robbing and murdering Victor Lee near the Grand Union Canal in Willesden Junction, located in west London, on June 23 of the previous year.

The trial took place at the Old Bailey, where it was revealed that Gokool-Mely had intended to steal Victor’s bicycle and a rucksack rumored to contain knives that the victim had purchased online for resale. The courtroom learned that Gokool-Mely had met Victor earlier that day to buy a crossbow, despite having no means to pay for additional items he planned to acquire.

During the incident, Victor suffered three stab wounds, and despite the brave efforts of two men living on nearby houseboats who rushed to retrieve him from the water, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Judge Peter Rook KC declared the attack a ‘vicious episode,’ emphasizing the severe force used in at least one of the stabbings.

Addressing Gokool-Mely directly, Judge Rook said, ‘Within moments of your actions, you deprived Victor of his most invaluable possession – his life.’ The judge acknowledged that Victor did not fully grasp the dangers associated with the meeting, which was driven by his burgeoning interest in weapon trading.

At the time of the attack, Gokool-Mely was on bail following a prior conviction for possession of a machete. The court was informed that Victor, a resident of North Acton, had developed an interest in firearms and related paraphernalia, with hopes of turning a profit, but lacked the wisdom to navigate the potential perils tied to such transactions.

Victor’s family described him as a shy and introspective individual who was easy to manipulate and vulnerable to exploitation. His mother, Kristina Lee, expressed the profound anguish felt by their family, stating that the pain of losing her son was ‘most terrible and unbearable.’ She lamented the shock and sorrow shared among family members, friends, and the wider community following the brutal act of violence.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie of Scotland Yard remarked that Victor was not involved in gangs or criminal activities but instead had a genuine interest in fixing and trading bicycles. He highlighted Victor’s energy and drive, yet acknowledged that he lacked the ability to properly assess people and situations, which ultimately played a role in his tragic fate.

The detective noted that when Victor encountered Gokool-Mely, he was unsuspectingly taken advantage of, leading to an unprovoked and horrifying assault that cost him his life.

In court, Gokool-Mely’s defense team argued that he felt remorse for his actions and wished he could reverse the events that unfolded. However, evidence presented by the police painted a more troubling picture of his mindset. Investigators discovered a notebook in Gokool-Mely’s prison cell that contained disturbing verses bragging about the murder.
