Texas School Districts Delay, Cancel Classes Due to Cold Weather
EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — Several school districts in the El Paso area have announced delays and cancellations for Wednesday, January 8, 2025, due to dangerously cold temperatures and inclement weather. The decision aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amid freezing conditions.
El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) announced a full-day closure on Wednesday, canceling all classes, extended day learning programs, and extracurricular activities. Gadsden Independent School District opted for a two-hour delay, citing wind chill temperatures expected to feel like eight degrees Fahrenheit. “This adjustment ensures the safety of our students waiting at bus stops during these conditions,” the district stated.
San Elizario Independent School District also canceled classes for Wednesday, citing potential hazardous road conditions. The district has scheduled a make-up day for May 5, 2025. In a statement, the district said, “This decision has been made to prioritize the safety of our students, staff, and community.”
Anthony Independent School District announced a two-hour delayed start, with elementary schools beginning at 9:45 a.m. and secondary schools at 10:30 a.m. Buses will operate on a delayed schedule to accommodate the changes.
Local authorities urge residents to stay updated through local TV and radio stations, district websites, and official social media channels. The National Weather Service has issued warnings for the region, emphasizing the risks of frostbite and hypothermia due to the extreme cold.
As the situation evolves, additional school districts in the area may announce further delays or cancellations. Parents and staff are advised to monitor official communications for updates.
