Olson served as the Solicitor General of the United States from 2001 to 2004, a position that involves representing the federal government before the U.S. Supreme Court. Prior to this role, he was the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Office of Legal Counsel from 1981 to 1984.

He was also a founding partner of the appellate and constitutional law practice group at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where he argued numerous high-profile cases before the Supreme Court. His arguments included cases that were pivotal in election law and other constitutional matters.
