St. Thomas Team Documents Art Inspired by George Floyd

St. Paul, Minnesota – A team from the University of St. Thomas is working to document street art inspired by George Floyd‘s death. This project highlights how artists respond to social issues through their work.
Since Floyd was killed by police in May 2020, murals and graffiti have appeared in various locations, expressing grief and demanding justice. The St. Thomas team seeks to collect stories and images of these artworks to preserve their impact.
Project leader, Dr. Leslie T. Smith, stated, “What happens in the streets reflects the community’s feelings. We want to capture that energy and emotion.” The initiative aims to create a digital archive that can educate future generations about the social movements following Floyd’s death.
The team recently held a workshop where community members shared their experiences and memories related to the art. Dr. Smith remarked, “By bringing people together, we not only document the art but also foster a deeper understanding of its significance.”
Support for this project comes from various local organizations dedicated to social justice and community engagement. The team hopes to continue this work, making sure the voices of artists and community members are heard.
