Thunderstorm Alerts Issued for Telangana Amid Rising Temperatures

HYDERABAD, India — The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow thunderstorm alerts for several districts in Telangana on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The alerts forecast lightning and strong winds throughout the region.
The orange alert signifies a high likelihood of intense weather conditions and covers districts including Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Mahabubabad, Warangal, and Hanamkonda. A yellow alert, indicating moderate weather disturbances, is in place for Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Mulugu, Jangaon, Siddipet, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Nagarkurnool, and Wanaparthy.
The recent unseasonal thundershowers have provided some relief from a severe heatwave, with temperatures in the state dropping by over 2°C. The highest temperature recorded on Sunday, May 4, was 42.5°C in Krishna mandal of Narayanpet, down from over 45°C earlier in April. In urban areas, the temperature dropped to 38.0°C in Hyderabad and 39.3°C in Rangareddy.
Weather expert T. Balaji reported that north, east, and central Telangana could experience scattered severe thunderstorms, strong winds, and isolated hail in the afternoon through midnight. The IMD confirmed that the thunderstorms would help residents escape several days of intense summer heat.
Despite the relief, residents must remain cautious as thunderstorms can create hazardous conditions throughout the affected districts.
