Thunderstorms Threaten Maryland Overnight with Heavy Rain and Winds

BALTIMORE, Md. — Heavy rain and thunderstorms are set to impact Central Maryland late Sunday night into early Monday morning. As of 6:45 p.m. on March 16, 2025, the strongest storms were located in the mountains and moving east-northeast.
By 8:45 p.m., the storms began to enter Central Maryland, bringing with them the potential for heavy rain, hail, and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph in some regions. Areas under a wind advisory may experience gusts between 40 and 55 mph.
The National Weather Service had issued a tornado watch for parts of Western Maryland, but this watch was canceled as the storms moved through. Forecasts indicate intermittent thunderstorms will continue throughout the night, dissipating by Monday morning. The severe storm threats appear to have diminished for the Baltimore area.
The cold front from the storm system is expected to lower temperatures into the mid-50s for Monday. After a day of heavy rain and strong winds, relief will come during the day on Monday with clearing skies and breezy conditions expected to persist.
Areas particularly affected include portions of Carroll County and Frederick County, where strong storms were anticipated to pass between 9:30 and 10:00 p.m. Storm-related damage has been reported across multiple U.S. states, particularly in the South, which faced tornadoes, dust storms, and wildfires, resulting in at least 37 fatalities.
“Residents should remain vigilant and be prepared for potential flooding and power outages,” said Tony Pann, a meteorologist at WBAL-TV. “Storms may vary in intensity, and localized flooding could occur.”
Citizens are encouraged to report any power outages to Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE) via its online platform or mobile app. BGE also advises residents not to approach any fallen power lines, regardless of their condition.
The upcoming week’s forecast includes sunny weather on Tuesday and Wednesday, with temperatures potentially reaching the lower 70s before another cold front arrives on Thursday, bringing the chance of more rain and gusty winds through the weekend.
As severe weather systems pass through the region, the WBAL-TV weather team will provide continuous updates. Residents can stay informed through alerts and coverage on local news broadcasts and social media.
