DETROIT — Gleyber Torres will remain with the Detroit Tigers for the 2026 season after accepting the team’s qualifying offer, according to multiple reports. The offer, extended on November 6, is worth just over $22 million.

The 29-year-old second baseman had a solid season in 2025, earning All-Star honors as he posted a .256 batting average, .745 OPS, 16 home runs, and 74 RBIs. However, Torres faced challenges in the second half of the season, suffering a hernia injury that impacted his performance.

“We loved having Gleyber this past season: the right-handed bat in the lineup, his ability to grind at bats, put the ball in play a ton, get on base, set that tempo at the top of the lineup, the presence in the clubhouse, those are all big things,” said Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg. This offer indicates the team’s confidence in Torres as a vital part of their future.

Torres’s decision came after 12 days of evaluating the free agent market, which suggests that a long-term deal was not feasible. He joins three other players—Trent Grisham, Shota Imanaga, and Brandon Woodruff—who also accepted qualifying offers this season.

Having Torres back in the lineup allows the Tigers options for their infield, with Spencer Torkelson at first base, and several prospects waiting in the wings, including Colt Keith and Jace Jung. If he had declined the offer, Detroit would have received a draft pick if he signed elsewhere.

As the Tigers prepare for the upcoming season, the staff is still evaluating their options to strengthen the lineup further. Torres’s return plays a crucial role in their strategy moving forward, particularly regarding potential free-agent acquisitions.
