Dangerous Tiktok Challenge Chromebook

May 9, 2025, (New Jersey) — A dangerous TikTok challenge is spreading across schools in the United States, prompting urgent warnings from school districts and law enforcement. The so-called ‘Chromebook Challenge’ encourages students to insert foreign objects into laptop USB ports, leading to fires and smoke.

Reports have emerged from multiple states, including New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Oklahoma, highlighting the severe risks associated with this trend. In New Jersey, a 15-year-old student faces arson charges after allegedly setting a Chromebook on fire, resulting in an evacuation at Belleville High School.

Prince George’s County Public Schools in Maryland reported up to 10 incidents. The district emphasized that such actions pose serious safety hazards and can lead to costly repairs. ‘We have seen a few incidents related to the Chromebook challenge in our district,’ officials stated.

Scranton School District in Pennsylvania described the challenge as ‘reckless and dangerous,’ urging parents to take notice of the risks. ‘We are taking this very seriously, and I am asking parents and guardians to help keep our students and buildings safe,’ said a spokesperson.

Other districts, including Mid-Del Schools in Oklahoma, warned that families would be held responsible for damages, highlighting the cost of replacing a ruined Chromebook, estimated at $274. Disciplinary actions for students involved can include suspension or expulsion.

In Texas, Hardin Junior High urged families to discuss the potential hazards of the challenge, stating there would be serious consequences for anyone attempting it, including possible legal action.

National law enforcement officials echoed these concerns. Jason Mowbray, Maryland’s acting state fire marshal, called for education on the dangers of such acts. ‘It is crucial that parents and educators work together to promote a culture of safety and responsibility regarding electronic devices,’ he said.

One alarming incident in Arizona led to the temporary evacuation of Bullhead City Middle School when a Chromebook began smoking. Evidence indicated the fire was linked to the challenge. Additionally, students have faced disciplinary action after vandalizing other school property.

Authorities and educators continue to monitor the situation, emphasizing the need for parental involvement in discussions with students about responsible behavior online and at school.
