TikTok’s Fluffy Popcorn Trend Raises Safety Concerns Over Raw Flour Usage
As Halloween approaches, a new snack trend on TikTok known as “Fluffy Popcorn” is gaining traction. While the treat appears fun and irresistible to many users, experts are issuing warnings about a potentially harmful ingredient used in the recipe: raw flour. The trend, although not entirely new, involves creating a popcorn snack that mimics the texture of Rice Krispies Treats by combining marshmallows and raw flour — the latter being a significant point of concern.
Popular videos on TikTok show users making this treat with minimal instruction, leaving out crucial safety guidelines about the ingredients involved. The popcorn mixture, made from popcorn, butter, marshmallows, sprinkles, and raw flour, becomes extra fluffy, but experts warn about the health risks associated with consuming uncooked flour, which can harbor harmful bacteria like E. coli and salmonella.
Microbiologist known as @𝔟𝔩𝔬𝔬𝔡𝔣𝔩𝔬𝔴𝔢𝔯 took to TikTok to voice concerns about the trend, stating, “If you value your kidneys, your liver, your colon, and want to avoid autoimmune diseases or colon cancer, reconsider trying this snack.” They emphasized that raw flour is a raw food and poses a risk of bacterial infections.
Despite some attempts to dismiss these warnings, the microbiologist pointed out that prevention is key, and the risk remains significant, even if individuals have previously consumed raw flour without adverse effects. Supporting these claims, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration also advises against consuming raw flour products.
The trend’s resurgence can be attributed to its seasonal appeal, with creators using Halloween-themed decorations and sounds to attract viewers. However, many users are beginning to post warnings on TikTok to discourage the use of raw flour in these recipes due to the potential health hazards.
While some continue to enjoy Fluffy Popcorn by excluding raw flour from the recipe, alternatives have surfaced that maintain the treat’s appeal without compromising health. Critics suggest heats-treating flour to eliminate bacteria, although the effectiveness of such methods is disputed.
It is recommended to use only cooked or baked flour when engaging in similar snack creations, especially those seen on social media platforms. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant regarding the ingredients they choose and to prioritize safety over viral trends.
