Tornadoes Strike Florida as Hurricane Milton Approaches
The National Weather Service confirmed the occurrence of a tornado in the Port Salerno–Stuart area on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. The tornado touched down near U.S. 1 and Cove Road, causing reports of downed branches and minor damage to a home. This event was among several possible tornadoes across St. Lucie and Martin counties, influenced by the outer bands of Hurricane Milton, which is currently closing in on Florida.
State Representative Toby Overdorf, R-Palm City, reported witnessing damage between Gatlin Boulevard and Becker Road. “Debris was all over the road,” he stated, noting apparent damage to vehicles. Overdorf described splintered trees, saying, “It was obvious that the tornado had touched down there.”
In Palm City, the Cobblestone community reported significant damage from a suspected tornado. Concerns arose about the storm preceding toward the Cheney Brothers facility or staying within the industrial regions of the Tradition area in Port St. Lucie.
Further damage was observed by WPTV reporter Meghan McRoberts at 4700 Midday Road, at the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office. According to Sheriff Keith Pearson, a 10,000-square-foot building where patrol cars are parked sustained damage. Fortunately, no deputies were inside at the time, and no injuries have been reported. The area also witnessed twisted iron and vehicle damage at the adjacent post office.
Sheriff William Snyder confirmed a definite tornado at mile marker 110 on Interstate 95, noting debris from the Cobblestone development in Palm City. “From all appearances, it was a tornado,” Snyder stated.
Authorities have issued multiple tornado warnings across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast. Residents are urged to stay indoors as this outbreak continues to develop on Wednesday afternoon.
