Toronto Blue Jays Place Kevin Kiermaier on Revocable Waivers Amidst Looming Deadline

The Toronto Blue Jays have made a significant move by placing outfielder Kevin Kiermaier on revocable waivers, a decision that could shape the team’s upcoming trade deadline strategy, according to MLB sources.

Kiermaier, known for his stellar defensive prowess, faces unlikely chances of being claimed off waivers due to his hefty $10.5 million salary for this season, the majority of which the Blue Jays have already covered.

Sources suggest this move may hint at the Blue Jays’ intentions as the deadline approaches, with the team currently languishing at the bottom of the American League East, trailing by 8.5 games for the final AL wild-card spot. Toronto is reportedly around $10 million above the $237 million luxury tax threshold and could aim to shed salary to alleviate their payroll burden.

33-year-old Kevin Kiermaier initially joined the Blue Jays on a one-year deal in 2023, displaying a resurgence in his offensive capabilities with a .265 average, eight home runs, and 36 RBIs in 129 games, alongside maintaining his impeccable fielding standards. However, Kiermaier’s production in 2024 has notably dipped, with a .183/.232/.290 slash line, three homers, and 13 RBIs across 70 games.

Before his stint in Toronto, Kiermaier spent a decade with the Tampa Bay Rays, earning four Gold Glove Awards for his defensive excellence in the outfield. As the Blue Jays wrap up their series against the Giants, they are set to face the Diamondbacks in Arizona, marking the final stretch before the All-Star Break.
