TORONTO — The Toronto Raptors are preparing to commemorate the contributions of NBA Hall of Famer Vince Carter by retiring his No. 15 jersey on November 2 during halftime of their game against the Sacramento Kings. Carter’s jersey retirement marks a significant milestone as he becomes the first player in the franchise’s history to receive this honor.

Carter attended an event organized by the MLSE Foundation in Toronto, speaking with emotion about the recognition. “I’m beyond words,” Carter said, visibly moved as tears filled his eyes, highlighting the personal significance of the Raptors’ gesture for the player who once called the city his “second home.”

Remarkably, the Raptors have displayed Carter’s jersey in prominent spots across Toronto, allowing fans to see the tribute on their daily commutes. Former teammates, Raptors officials, and several current players gathered to support Carter at a park in the northwest area of the city, marking the beginning of the 30th anniversary celebrations of the franchise.

Team President Masai Ujiri expressed the appropriateness of the tribute during a landmark anniversary year. Carter’s talent was evident when he won the NBA rookie of the year award during his first season after being acquired in a draft-day trade with the Golden State Warriors in 1998.

His performances, including winning the 2000 slam dunk contest and guiding the Raptors to their first playoff appearance and the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2001, cemented his place in Toronto’s history. Despite a controversial moment in 2001 when Carter attended his college graduation on the morning of Game 7 against the Philadelphia 76ers, his impact on the court remained significant.

Carter’s relationship with Toronto soured after he requested a trade in 2004, later moving to the New Jersey Nets. Despite initial hostility from fans during his returns to Toronto, time has softened the animosity, allowing both Carter and the Raptors to mend their relationship.

In addition to playing with the Raptors and Nets, Carter’s NBA career spanned stints with several teams, including the Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, and Atlanta Hawks. Notably, he is recognized as the only NBA player to have played in four different decades, boasting an average of 16.7 points per game throughout his lengthy career.

His upcoming induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame, alongside the jersey retirement, solidifies Carter’s legacy within the sport. Adding to the series of tributes, the Raptors plan to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Carter’s iconic slam dunk contest victory in February.
