Tenerife Tourists Scam

Travellers attracted to the Canary Islands for their year-round sunny climate are being warned of scams that may ruin their getaway. Despite its winter appeal, with average temperatures in the 20s Celsius, Tenerife is currently facing an issue of tourists falling victim to criminal activities.

A concerning warning comes from a British expatriate residing in Tenerife, who has notified tourists through social media platforms. A TikTok user, identified as @seb_tenerife, created a video titled ‘Be CAREFUL in Tenerife!!!’ which has gathered over 18,000 views. In the video, the tourist advises visitors to be aware of a scam involving individuals asking to use their mobile phones, claiming they have lost their friends or need directions. Once the phone is unlocked, the scammer grabs it and flees.

Seb, who describes himself as a “Northerner on tour,” compares this scam to similar incidences occurring in Benidorm and advises, “Be very careful,” as pickpockets are reportedly active in the area. He emphasizes the need for vigilance in destinations such as Tenerife and Benidorm, which are renowned for their lively nightlife and tourist attractions.

The warning is particularly pertinent to the area around Playa de las Américas, especially on Veronicas Strip, a hub for nightlife which is frequented by tourists. Reviews from other tourists echo Seb’s concerns. One commenter recounts an encounter where they were robbed on their first day, losing their phone and cards, rendering them without funds for the remainder of their trip. Another mentioned being robbed twice in a week while inebriated.

In addition to phone thefts, former residents and workers in Tenerife have highlighted a more pervasive concern. Ciara O’Loughlin, who worked as a bartender on the island for two summers, has described an “underlying drug scene” in Playa de las Américas. She notes that this “serious drug underworld” can inadvertently lead tourists into complications, especially outsiders unfamiliar with the local context.

The alert from local sources and expatriates continues to highlight the necessity for travelers to maintain awareness about their belongings and surroundings while enjoying the attractions that Tenerife has to offer. Taking precautions such as keeping mobile phones secured and limiting interactions with strangers in certain contexts can help to mitigate these risks.
