Tragedy Mars Indian Air Force Show in Chennai: Three Dead, 230 Hospitalized
A tragic incident unfolded at an Indian Air Force (IAF) air show held at Marina Beach in Chennai on October 6, 2024, as three spectators lost their lives and 230 others were hospitalized due to dehydration. The event, organized to commemorate the 92nd anniversary of the IAF, was marred by overcrowding and sweltering temperatures, which posed significant challenges to the attendees.
The air show featured a display of around 72 aircraft, including modern fighter jets like the Rafale, as well as heritage aircraft such as the Dakota and Harvard. The event, titled ‘Bharatiya Vayusena: Saksham, Sashakt aur Aatmnirbhar’ (Indian Air Force: Capable, Strong, and Self-reliant), aimed to highlight India’s growing military readiness and the IAF’s commitment to national security and self-reliance.
Despite clear skies providing favorable viewing conditions, the intense heat and the massive turnout of spectators led to dangerous overcrowding. The fatalities were identified as Srinivasan, 48, from Perungalathur; Karthikeyan, 34, from Thiruvottiyur; and John, 56, from Korukuppet. Authorities and medical teams were called to the scene to attend to those affected by the dehydration incident.
The event drew significant attention and criticism from political spheres, with Tamil Nadu BJP Chief K. Annamalai expressing his deep shock over the tragedy. Annamalai criticized the state’s ruling DMK government, accusing it of neglecting public safety and failing to implement basic safety measures and transportation arrangements. “The loss of lives cannot be passed off as an accident,” he stated, attributing the incident to administrative failures.
The senior BJP leader further accused Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of prioritizing political promotion over public safety. “The misery of hundreds of families cannot be ignored,” Annamalai insisted, demanding accountability from the Chief Minister.
Ahead of the air show, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police had issued advisories urging the public to make use of Metro and MRTS services to ensure a smoother experience. The suggestions, however, seemed insufficient to mitigate the challenges posed by the large crowds and high temperatures.
