SAN GERONIMO, California — Four teenage girls died, and two others were critically injured in a tragic car crash on San Geronimo Valley Road Friday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. when a Volkswagen SUV veered off the roadway and crashed into a tree. The girls, aged 14 to 16, were all students at Archie Williams High School in San Anselmo.

CHP officers, along with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office and Marin County Fire Department, arrived at the scene to find six juveniles inside the vehicle. Three girls were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to her injuries at a hospital, said Chief Deputy Coroner Roger Fielding.

The two survivors were transported to hospitals outside Marin for advanced medical care. Their conditions remain critical.

Tara Taupier, superintendent of the Tamalpais Union High School District, expressed deep sorrow in a public statement. “This is an incredibly heart-wrenching time for our entire school and broader community,” she noted, adding that the district would coordinate with Marin County to provide grief counseling to students and staff at all district schools.

In a heartfelt message, Capt. Amy Newton, commander of the CHP’s Marin office, offered condolences to the victims’ families. “No words can ease the pain of such a devastating loss, and our hearts are with the entire community as they grieve,” she said.

Authorities have not released the names of the deceased, and the CHP is continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. They are seeking assistance from the public, urging anyone with information to call 415-924-1100.

Residents in the area expressed their shock and sorrow over the tragedy. Following the incident, flowers were placed at the base of the tree that the vehicle struck.

A community vigil is planned for Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the central ballfield in Fairfax, where community members will come together to honor the victims.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash is ongoing.
