Tragic Collision Off Miami Beach Claims Lives of Two Young Sailors

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating a fatal vessel collision off Miami Beach, near Hibiscus Island. On Monday morning, a barge struck a sailboat carrying children in a summer sailing program, killing two and injuring two others critically.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. in Biscayne Bay. According to the Coast Guard, a 7-year-old and a 13-year-old girl died as a result of the collision. An 8-year-old and an 11-year-old girl remain in critical condition.
Officials reported that six people were on board the sailboat at the time of the crash, including five children and an adult counselor. After the barge struck the sailboat, it sank, and all occupants were thrown into the water, with some reportedly trapped beneath the vessel.
Rescue divers from Miami Beach Fire Rescue arrived within minutes, followed by additional responders from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, City of Miami Fire Rescue, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Three victims were taken to Miami-Dade Marina, while the two deceased children were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The Miami Yacht Club confirmed that the victims were part of their summer program, the Miami Youth Sailing Foundation. In a statement, the club expressed deep concern, stating, “At this time, details are still emerging, and we are actively gathering all available facts. Our priority is the safety and well-being of everyone involved.”
The Coast Guard set up a 250-yard safety zone around the scene, where the submerged sailboat remains under the barge. Capt. Frank Florio of the Coast Guard expressed condolences for the families affected, saying, “Our hearts are with the families of those lost and all who have been affected by this tragedy.”
As of Monday evening, the investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing, with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission assisting the Coast Guard.
