Tragic Discovery: Body of Water and Sanitation Deputy Director Found
Sello Machitje, who served as the deputy director of the Department of Water and Sanitation, has sadly been discovered deceased. Authorities have confirmed the identification of his body through family members, reported by Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza on Friday, July 19.
Machitje’s disappearance was first reported following a hijacking incident that occurred on Monday, July 8. Details surrounding the circumstances of his vanishing are still being pieced together. On the day he was last seen, he left home around 5 PM, heading towards the Eastern Cape.
His family grew worried when he failed to make his customary call upon arrival. By 8 PM, his wife tried to contact him, but his phone remained unanswered. This lack of communication prompted family members to inform the local police of his concerns over his sudden absence.
Despite not being issued a formal case number, the family received an OB number, which later assisted trackers in locating his vehicle. The car was seen moving within the areas of Alexandra and Marlboro, situated north of Johannesburg, before it was eventually recovered abandoned in Alexandra.
Colonel Kweza previously stated that law enforcement officials, in tandem with private security agencies, tracked down Machitje’s vehicle in Alexandra. A 53-year-old suspect was subsequently apprehended for possessing the stolen vehicle, originally linked to the hijacking case.
After the grim discovery of Machitje’s body, the SunTeam reported on whether this suspect would face murder charges. According to Kweza, investigations are still underway to ascertain any connections between the arrested individual and the murder of Machitje.
The ongoing inquiries are focused on trying to establish a relationship between the suspect, captured for vehicle possession, and the circumstances surrounding Machitje’s tragic demise. Kweza reinforced that the determination of such connections is crucial to finalizing the investigation.
Daily Sun attempted to reach out to Machitje’s family for a statement; however, a spokesperson indicated that they were tied up in a meeting and requested to be contacted later.
