Tragic Landslides in Wayanad Claim Over 100 Lives

Heavy rain hit Wayanad in Kerala on Tuesday morning, causing devastating landslides that have taken the lives of more than 100 people. The tragic events unfolded around Meppadi, where rescue efforts are ongoing for many others who might still be trapped.

A local government representative confirmed that at least 123 people have died from the landslides, while over 129 individuals have been treated for injuries in local hospitals. Meanwhile, approximately 250 people have been moved to temporary shelters.

The landslides occurred during the early hours when heavy downpours continued to saturate the already wet ground. With the southwest monsoon bringing relentless rain, many areas in Wayanad, including places like Mundakai and Attamala, were significantly affected.

Residents reported hearing multiple landslides, and a local resident, Rashid Padikallparamban, shared how bridges were washed away, cutting off access to some communities. Rescuers have had difficulty due to strong river currents complicating efforts to reach those in need.

As authorities scrambled to coordinate relief efforts, climate experts expressed concerns about the warming of the Arabian Sea. S. Abhilash, a climate scientist from Cochin University of Science and Technology, explained that this warming is leading to increased rainfall and raises the likelihood of such dangerous landslides.

The IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) has also reported alarming rainfall levels in various districts, prompting them to issue red alerts for areas like Kasargod, Kannur, and Malappuram. Many regions recorded rainfall amounts between 19 cm to 35 cm in just 24 hours, which is exceptionally high.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains a grim time for Wayanad. Many families are in mourning, and the community is coming together to support one another in this challenging time.
