MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — A 25-year-old man is in custody following a devastating crash that claimed the lives of a woman and four children Saturday evening at approximately 5:57 p.m., according to local officials.
Authorities identified the deceased as the passengers in a white Nissan Altima, which was involved in a collision with a black Kia Sorento and a silver Cadillac Escalade at the intersection of Northwest 170th Street and 37th Avenue. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to reports of a “mass casualty incident,” where multiple individuals were injured.
Miami Gardens Police Executive Officer Emmanuel Jeanty confirmed that three individuals were trapped inside the Altima and required extraction by emergency services. In total, nine individuals were transported to local hospitals, with one child airlifted to a trauma center in Hollywood.
According to preliminary investigations, the Kia Sorento crashed into the rear of the Altima, pushing it into the Escalade. Witnesses, including an Opa-Locka police officer on his way to work, confirmed the details of the crash, while surveillance footage captured the moment of impact.
Jeanty stated that the children killed, reportedly siblings, included Kamari Graham, celebrating his 10th birthday, along with 9-year-old Azariah McCall and 11-year-old Ireanna Johnson. The deceased, who were inside the Altima when the incident occurred, have not yet been named publicly. The children’s mother remains in critical condition, while another family friend was hospitalized but in stable condition.
Antonio Wilcox, the driver of the Kia Sorento, was determined to be at fault for the accident. He was arrested and is facing five counts of vehicular homicide. Jeanty noted that both speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. “It’s going to be a very tough night for our community, our officers, and everyone involved in this tragedy,” he said.
As detectives continue their investigation, police expect additional charges for Wilcox once toxicology results are available. Traffic remains blocked along 37th Avenue between 169th and 171st Streets as investigators gather evidence.
Family members of the victims expressed their grief, with Susie Williams, an aunt to the deceased children, recalling their joy and vibrancy. “They were wonderful kids… I’m really gonna miss them,” she said, urging the community to pray for her family. In the wake of the tragedy, there are calls for increased awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.
