Tragic Multi Vehicle Crash On Highway 1 Claims Lives Of Mother And Son

A tragic accident unfolded on Highway 1 near Chilliwack on Tuesday afternoon, claiming the lives of a local woman and her young son.

The crash occurred around 2:40 p.m. and involved six vehicles, with a total of ten people caught in the chaos. Emergency responders quickly rushed to the scene, but sadly, the mother and her son were declared deceased right on the spot.

The woman was traveling with her twins on their way to Kelowna for a family visit. Reports indicate that her other son, a twin brother of the deceased child, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive.

According to the B.C. Highway Patrol, initial investigations suggest that one or more vehicles came to an abrupt stop due to an obstruction in the roadway, which led to a chain reaction of collisions.

Authorities mentioned that a ladder was found on the road, which is suspected to be the source of the obstruction, but the origins of the ladder remain unclear as the investigation continues.

Cpl. Melissa Jongema noted how complex and tragic the scene was. Many first responders and witnesses were affected by the event that unfolded, considering the time of day and location’s busyness.

This unfortunate incident has highlighted concerns regarding road safety, especially as July marked a particularly deadly month on B.C. roads, with 49 fatalities recorded.
