Travel Update: Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta Airports Prepare for Busy Summer

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – The Guadalajara International Airport is one of the busiest airports in Mexico, ranking behind only Mexico City and Cancun. This week alone, the airport estimates over a thousand weekly flight departures, servicing both national and international routes.
If you have a flight scheduled for today, Saturday, May 24, authorities advise all travelers to check their flight status due to increased traffic. Most flights to Europe from Guadalajara typically have layovers in Mexico City, but there is a direct flight available from the Jalisco capital.
PURTO VALLARTA, Mexico – On a related note, Puerto Vallarta is renowned for its natural beauty, stunning beaches, delicious cuisine, and vibrant nightlife. The airport here is crucial for tourism, having welcomed over 4.5 million passengers in 2024 and becoming one of Mexico’s most frequented terminals.
In addition to national flights to cities like Mexico City, Monterrey, and Tijuana, the Puerto Vallarta airport connects to more than 50 international destinations, including Los Angeles, Dallas, and San Francisco.
Meanwhile, on May 23, airlines operating in Mexico City activated special passenger protection policies in light of ongoing protests by the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE). These protests have blocked access to the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), leading to significant travel disruptions. Both Viva Aerobus and Aeroméxico have introduced measures to accommodate affected passengers.
Viva Aerobus announced its “Flex-Sí-bilidad” policy, allowing passengers to change flight dates without additional charges through May 30. Aeroméxico has also issued a similar policy, valid until May 27, for ticket holders responding to the travel interruptions.
Travelers are reminded to check traffic conditions on major routes, particularly the Guadalajara-Puerto Vallarta highway, which frequently experiences accidents that can lead to delays. Currently, traffic is flowing moderately, with no significant incidents reported.
As summer approaches, both airports expect a surge in travelers and recommend that passengers stay informed about their flight schedules and road conditions.
