Travelers Should Expect Minor Delays Amid Federal Government Shutdown

Washington, D.C. — Travelers applying for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry during the ongoing federal government shutdown do not need to worry about delayed applications. Officials from the Department of Homeland Security confirmed that processing for both programs will continue as usual.

“We do not anticipate any delays processing or scheduling appointments for Global Entry and PreCheck applications,” a spokesperson said. Global Entry applications usually take about 48 days to process, while PreCheck applicants will typically receive responses within 3-5 business days. Those requiring further review for PreCheck might wait approximately 60 days.

The federal government entered a shutdown early Wednesday after lawmakers failed to agree on budget legislation. Essential services related to air travel, including air traffic control and TSA, remain operational. However, past shutdowns suggest that issues could arise the longer the deadlock continues.

During the 2018-2019 shutdown, TSA workers began calling in sick due to unpaid work, leading to longer airport security lines and temporary airport closures. As federal employees, TSA agents and air traffic controllers are required to work without pay during the current shutdown.

Though TSA checkpoints are expected to function normally in the short term, delays may increase if the shutdown continues. Travelers are advised to arrive earlier than usual at airports, particularly during busy travel periods.

Global Entry applicants may face potential delays, as enrollment is often less prioritized during shutdowns. Previously, applicants have experienced significant backlogs, and while this shutdown may not bring as many new applicants, those waiting could still see longer processing times.

Overall, while immediate impacts on air travel are expected to be minor, prolonged shutdowns present risks of heightened frustration and disruptions for travelers and airport operations due to staffing shortages.
