Tributes Paid to Former BBC Presenter Beccy Barr Who Died After Cancer Battle

A former BBC TV presenter who made a bold career shift to become a firefighter has tragically passed away. Beccy Barr, who was 46 years old and hailing from Lancaster, joined the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service in September 2019 after a remarkable 20-year career in journalism, including seven years with BBC’s North West Tonight.

Ms. Barr’s journey took a difficult turn early in 2023 when she was diagnosed with incurable abdominal cancer. This diagnosis brought an unexpected challenge to a life already marked by courage and re-invention. Her sister shared the sad news on social media, revealing that Beccy passed away peacefully in the morning at St John’s Hospice, a place where she received compassionate care during her final days.

Annabel Tiffin, a colleague from her time at North West Tonight, remembered Beccy as a “feisty, fearless woman.” Current BBC presenter Roger Johnson spoke warmly of her, stating that she “was courageous in so many ways,” highlighting not only her brave battle with illness but also the courage it took to leave a successful TV career to pursue a path in firefighting.

Beccy kept her father’s legacy alive through her work as a firefighter. She was proud to follow in Roy Barr‘s footsteps, a path that many in her family would admire. Beyond her professional achievements, Beccy was also dedicated to her community. She served as a leader for Girlguiding, where she ran a Rainbow unit at St Paul’s Church in Scotforth. In addition to her work as a journalist and firefighter, Beccy was active in the triathlon community and participated in events like IronmanUK, as well as other long-distance athletic challenges. Her commitment to living life to the fullest extended to every aspect of her lifestyle.
