Tropical Storm Oscar Forms in the Atlantic, Poses Threat to Caribbean Islands
Tropical Storm Oscar has developed from Invest 94L in the western Atlantic, marking the 14th named storm of this year’s hurricane season. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Oscar formed unexpectedly on Saturday, evolving from a lingering disturbance into a tropical cyclone within hours.
The storm currently has peak sustained winds of 40 mph and is positioned less than 200 miles from the southeastern Bahamas. The NHC has issued Tropical Storm Warnings for parts of the Bahamas, the Turks and Caicos Islands, and eastern Cuba, as these regions brace for its impact.
Oscar has rapidly developed due to favorable warm waters and atmospheric conditions. “Oscar found a patch of warm water and atmospheric conditions to its liking,” stated the NHC, which reported the storm producing concentrated showers and thunderstorms near the Turks and Caicos Islands.
The storm is predicted to bring heavy rains, strong winds, and rough seas to the affected areas. The NHC forecasts rainfall amounts of 2-4 inches, with isolated areas receiving up to 6 inches in the Turks and Caicos, southeastern Cuba, and southeastern Bahamas, persisting through Tuesday.
“The system will track west, near the Dominican Republic and Haiti, then stall near or over the southeastern Bahamas or eastern Cuba,” reported a FOX Weather Hurricane Specialist. “It is forecast to linger there into Monday, likely as a weak system, with hostile upper winds possibly moving it to the north.”
Tropical Storm Oscar joins another storm named on the same day, becoming the second storm to receive a name on Saturday. While residents of the northern Caribbean islands should monitor Oscar’s progress closely, the storm poses no immediate threat to the United States, due to an expansive ridge of high pressure over the East Coast, creating a natural barrier against tropical disturbances.
In addition to Tropical Storm Oscar, the NHC is also tracking Tropical Storm Nadine, which is expected to make landfall near the Yucatan Peninsula on Saturday evening.
