Following Donald Trump‘s victory in the U.S. presidential election, the ongoing RussiaUkraine conflict has entered a period of heightened uncertainty. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has congratulated Trump and urged him to continue supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression, despite concerns that Trump’s administration might reduce U.S. support for Kyiv.

The Kremlin has reacted cautiously to Trump’s win, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov stating that Russia has “no illusions” about the new administration and labeling the U.S. as an “unfriendly” country directly involved in the conflict. Putin praised Trump’s resilience after his recent assassination attempt but did not commit to any immediate actions regarding the war in Ukraine.

Trump has previously claimed he could end the Ukraine war within 24 hours, though this assertion has been met with skepticism by the Kremlin. Peskov described Trump’s claim as an “exaggeration,” and Putin did not offer any concrete commitments to ending the conflict quickly.

The involvement of North Korean troops in the conflict has added a new layer of complexity. Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov confirmed that the first battles between Ukrainian forces and North Korean soldiers have taken place, marking a significant escalation. The training period for North Korean troops has been shortened to as little as one to two weeks to expedite their deployment to the frontline.

Ukrainian forces and civilians remain pessimistic about the future under Trump’s leadership. Many fear that Trump might pressure Ukraine to concede territory to Russia to end the conflict, a prospect that is highly unpopular in Ukraine. The U.S. has provided $108 billion in military, humanitarian, and economic aid to Ukraine since the invasion began in 2022, but there are concerns about the continuity of this support under Trump.

As the war nears its third anniversary, Ukraine continues to face significant challenges, including daily Russian attacks on its cities and a severely impacted economy. The international community, particularly the U.S., remains crucial for Ukraine’s survival and resistance against Russian aggression.
