Tirumala Laddu Controversy

The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has lodged a complaint against the media outlet, Sakshi, over an article that allegedly aimed to tarnish the reputation of the Devasthanam. Following an examination of preliminary evidence, a case was registered at a local police station.

The controversy arose during the annual Brahmotsavam festival when an article published by Sakshi implied that former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu, influenced the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating an alleged laddu adulteration case. The article suggested that Naidu, after offering customary clothes to Lord Venkateswara, addressed a meeting with TTD officials, allegedly stating, “I will take care of everything,” thereby suggesting potential interference in the ongoing investigation.

In response to the publication, TTD Deputy Executive Officer, Lokanatham, filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Sakshi. The complaint, which is lodged under Sections 353(2), 356, and 196(1)(A) of the Indian Penal Code, accuses the media outlet of disseminating false information and attempting to undermine the credibility of official proceedings. These sections address offenses related to obstruction of public servant duties and false reporting.

TTD officials, including Lokanatham, have strongly refuted the claims made in the article, maintaining that there was no such interference by Naidu in the SIT’s work. “All accusations made in the article are entirely baseless,” Lokanatham stated in his complaint.

The incident has heightened tensions between the ruling Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) and the opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP), with the TTD’s legal action revealing deep-rooted political struggles. Critics argue that the issue surrounding the Tirumala Laddu, a significant religious offering, has been politically exploited, affecting decisions and actions of those in governance.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the case continues to draw significant attention, with TTD asserting its stance and challenging Sakshi’s editorial approach towards sensitive religious matters.
