Tulsa Public Schools Track Meet Incident

TULSA, Okla. — A Tulsa Public Schools assistant coach was arrested for allegedly assaulting a minor during a track meet on April 17. Police records indicate that a brawl broke out among students around 6:15 p.m. at the event.

Assistant Coach Gui Lowmack reportedly struck a student in the face, causing what police described as “great bodily harm.” He voluntarily turned himself in on April 21 and faces charges of assault and battery on a minor as well as aggravated assault and battery. The incident was captured on school surveillance cameras.

When contacted, Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) declined to release the footage of the incident, citing privacy protections under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). In a statement issued on April 18, TPS condemned the violence that led to the suspension of the track meet.

“There is nothing we take more seriously at Tulsa Public Schools than the safety and wellbeing of our students,” TPS said. They added that the altercation required swift action from school security to maintain order.

According to TPS, their Campus Police department is conducting a thorough investigation and is cooperating with local law enforcement. The statement emphasized the importance of safeguarding students and the need for role models among adults working in schools.

TPS clarified that Lowmack was not a full-time employee but served as an adjunct coach during the current season up until April 17. The school district expressed gratitude for the quick response from law enforcement at the scene.

TPS added they prioritize the safety of their students and promised to keep their community informed as the investigation progresses.
