ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan — On June 3, Turkmenistan held its annual celebration of World Bicycle Day, featuring nationwide bicycle parades. The event, broadcasted on state television and uploaded to YouTube, showcases both national pride and the unique character of the authoritarian regime.

The bicycle celebrations date back to 2018 when Turkmenistan sponsored a United Nations resolution to establish June 3 as World Bicycle Day. This initiative was based on the grassroots campaign led by Polish-American academic Leszek Sibilski, who worked with his students to promote cycling.

Despite the festive atmosphere, the reality in Turkmenistan includes widespread human rights abuses and the eccentric leadership of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. In recent years, criticisms have arisen regarding the international cycling governing body, the UCI, awarding Berdimuhamedov its highest distinction, the UCI Order, raising concerns about the organization’s integrity.

In an additional controversial move, Turkmenistan was awarded the 2021 Track World Championships, which were later relocated due to ‘COVID-19’ concerns. Reports have suggested that the UCI’s decision was scrutinized because of its support for an oppressive regime.

As World Bicycle Day draws global attention, the celebrations in Turkmenistan continue to raise questions about the country’s complex relationship with international cycling and its leadership. As parades unfold across the nation, observers globally wonder how such festivities coexist with the nation’s human rights record.

“Happy World Bicycle Day! It’s a chance to reflect on our friends in Turkmenistan and their celebrations,” said a cycling advocate.
