Koppal Karnataka Gang Rape Incident

NEW DELHI (AP) — Police in southern India announced Saturday the arrest of two men in connection with the gang rape of an Israeli tourist and her Indian homestay operator. The incident occurred on Thursday night in Koppal, Karnataka, during a stargazing outing with three male travelers — an American and two Indians, according to police official Ram L. Arasiddi.

According to preliminary investigations, the group’s stargazing session turned violent when three men on a motorbike approached, asking for money. After a brief argument, the assailants allegedly pushed the male travelers into a nearby water canal, allowing them to attack the women.

“They were out enjoying the night when they were suddenly confronted,” Arasiddi said. Tragically, one of the Indian tourists drowned in the canal, and his body was recovered on Saturday. The other two male travelers managed to swim to safety.

Koppal is situated approximately 350 kilometers (217 miles) from Bengaluru, known as India’s technology and startup hub. Following the incident, a special investigation team was formed, leading to the arrests of two suspects on suspicion of attempted murder, gang rape, and robbery.

This incident sheds light on the broader issue of violence against women in India. National Crime Records Bureau data indicates there were 31,516 reported rape cases in 2022—a 20% increase from the previous year. Activists contend the actual number is higher, citing societal stigma and a lack of victim trust in law enforcement.

Arasiddi further noted, “This incident has once again raised concerns about the safety of tourists as well as women in India.” The police have vowed to take strict action against the accused, with the investigation ongoing.

Similar incidents have garnered international attention in the past, particularly following high-profile cases that led to public outcry and judicial reforms. Hampi, the location of the reported attack, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its rich history and cultural significance.

Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah condemned the attack on social media, calling it a “heinous act” and assuring that quick action would be taken to bring the culprits to justice.

The victims are currently receiving medical attention at a local government hospital, with support from authorities to ensure their well-being during this distressing time.
