BRYCE CANYON CITY, Utah (AP) — Two people died after falling approximately 380 feet from a lookout point at Bryce Canyon National Park. Authorities reported that the incident occurred late Monday or early Tuesday morning, with their bodies discovered by tourists on Tuesday.

The victims have been identified as Matthew Nannen, 45, and Bailee Crane, 58. Both were reportedly residing in a U-Haul truck and had recently spent time in Arizona, although their last permanent address was in Florida.

According to Wade Mathews, a spokesperson for the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, the two individuals had climbed over safety railings at Inspiration Point before the fall. Park rangers and search and rescue teams, along with helicopter crews, assisted in recovering their bodies from the difficult terrain.

Snowy and slick conditions were reported at the park, which may have contributed to the fatal incident. “We think they somehow got across the railing and fell,” said Sheriff Eric Houston, noting slide marks that suggest an accidental fall.

Inspiration Point is a popular scenic overlook within the park, offering views of the unique rock formations known as hoodoos. Bryce Canyon attracts over two million visitors each year, and safety guidance is emphasized as winter conditions can make trails increasingly hazardous.

The National Park Service had not responded to inquiries about the incident by Wednesday morning, but Wade Matthews advised visitors to stay vigilant about safety barriers and to come prepared for the rugged terrain.
