MALTA, N.Y. — New York State Police, alongside the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office, are investigating two separate officer-involved shootings in Malta that occurred within 48 hours. The first incident took place on April 9, 2025, when law enforcement responded to an armed suspect firing shots at the Saratoga State Police barracks. The second incident, a fatal standoff, occurred on April 10, resulting in the death of a suspect identified as Brandon R. Moore.

On April 10, State Police received a report of a domestic dispute at the Ellsworth Apartments located at 2113 Route 9 at approximately 8:53 a.m. Upon arrival, officers encountered Moore, 37, who had reportedly barricaded himself within his apartment. Law enforcement was informed that Moore possibly had access to firearms. Efforts to negotiate with Moore continued until shortly after 10:30 a.m.

During the standoff, Moore exited the apartment with what appeared to be a handgun. When instructed by officers to drop the weapon, he instead aimed it at them. In response, law enforcement members discharged their firearms, fatally hitting him. The weapon the suspect displayed was later identified as a loaded CO2-powered BB pistol.

Two troopers sustained minor injuries during the confrontation and were treated at the scene. Authorities have clarified that both officers involved are currently on voluntary administrative leave as per standard protocol following such incidents.

The earlier shooting on April 9 involved David M. Levine, 69, who fired a long gun at the state police barracks. Troopers confronted Levine, who aimed his firearm at them, prompting officers to return fire, resulting in his death. No officers were injured in this incident.

Investigation into both incidents is ongoing, with the Attorney General’s Office notified and currently engaged in the inquiry. According to police, both situations were isolated and pose no further threat to public safety.

“This is a tragic situation for everyone involved,” Major Christopher T. Gilroy, Troop G commander, stated. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the families affected and appreciate the community’s cooperation during this time.”

As the investigations proceed, authorities have evacuated the Ellsworth Apartments out of an abundance of caution. Residents are currently displaced while assessments are being made regarding structural safety due to an activated sprinkler system during the April 10 incident.

State Route 9 was temporarily closed during both incidents, but some lanes have since been reopened. Updates regarding the investigations will be made available as more information is confirmed.
