STORRS, Conn. — The University of Connecticut men’s basketball team, fresh off a dramatic win, is gearing up for a crucial showdown against Providence on Friday as March approaches.

In a recent game, UConn rallied from a 14-point deficit to clinch an 87-84 victory over Providence at Gampel Pavilion. Coach Dan Hurley reflected on the game, stating, “It was fun to relive that. It feels like there’s been a lot of games like that.” The win marked UConn’s first double-digit margin of victory since January 29, halting a streak of tight contests in which seven of the last 13 games were decided by five points or less.

Currently, UConn is chasing Marquette for a better position in the Big East standings. As the Huskies prepare for their final true road game of the regular season, Hurley emphasized the significance of these late-season matchups. “On the road in your league, it’s hard to win… We’re trying to get as high as the two or three seed here in this league,” he said.

After missing several games, UConn’s Liam McNeeley has returned to the starting lineup, providing a much-needed boost, while Providence will still be without star forward Bryce Hopkins due to injury. Hurley acknowledged McNeeley’s influence, saying, “It takes pressure off other people offensively, it takes pressure off Alex (Karaban) and Solo (Ball).”

In their previous encounter, UConn’s rebounding was a significant issue, as they were outrebounded 34-22 by the Friars. This time, balancing the rebounding game with reliance on key players like Hassan Diarra will be crucial. Diarra performed well in the last matchup, scoring 19 points and contributing eight assists before facing late-game challenges.

For Providence, the pressure will rest heavily on Jayden Pierre, who has taken on a substantial scoring role, averaging 12.9 points per game. Hurley noted Pierre’s abilities, stating, “He’s a hard guy to help off of and he’s obviously a clever player.”

As both teams gear up for the March clash, anticipation builds. The matchup could significantly impact their respective playoff prospects as they navigate the final stretch of the regular season. The game is set to take place at Amica Mutual Pavilion, with tip-off scheduled for noon.

UConn will aim to strengthen its standing with an overall record of 19-9 and a Big East record of 11-6 against Providence’s 12-16 record and 6-11 in the Big East. The Huskies lead the all-time series 39-36, with the last encounter resulting in their narrow victory at home earlier this month.

For fans unable to attend, the game will be broadcast on CBS, with commentary from Andrew Catalon and Steve Lappas, while radio coverage will be provided by Fox Sports 97.9 featuring Mike Crispino and Wayne Norman.
