Unexpected Thunderstorm Strikes Mumbai, Causes Disruption
Heavy rainfall accompanied by violent thunderstorms and lightning struck Mumbai on Thursday night, leaving many residents surprised and concerned. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a yellow alert for the city predicting light to moderate rainfall. However, the intensity of the storm exceeded expectations, catching many off guard.
Social media platform X was flooded with posts and visuals capturing the dramatic weather conditions. Users shared videos showcasing the loud thunderclaps and flashes of strong lightning that illuminated the city’s skyline. “Nature’s fury on full display in Mumbai tonight! ⚡️⛈️ The city lit up by a powerful thunderstorm—Mother Nature never fails to amaze,” tweeted one user, Rohit Rai.
Another post by user Vineet Gaur poetically linked the weather to the passing of industrialist Ratan Tata, suggesting the city was “crying.” Climate change concerns were also raised by many, pointing to the unusual occurrence of such storms in October. “Mumbai rains are something else,” wrote user FAISAL, highlighting the city’s love-hate relationship with the monsoon season.
Waterlogging was reported in various low-lying areas, including Elphinstone Road and NM Joshi Marg, adding to the chaos caused by the storm. The unexpected downpour also disrupted ongoing Navratri festivities, which saw several ‘garba’ events being canceled or delayed, affecting celebrations.
Warnings from weather enthusiasts indicated that central and south Mumbai were particularly vulnerable, with predictions for more thunderstorms. Jitendra Meena, another user on X, advised residents to stay alert, noting that convective clouds surrounded the region on three sides.
