United Airlines Changes Check-In Time Ahead of Memorial Day Travel Rush

CHICAGO, Ill. — Starting June 3, United Airlines will change its check-in cutoff time for domestic flights. Passengers will now need to check in at least 45 minutes before departure, up from the previous 30-minute window.
A United spokesperson stated, “The change brings greater consistency for our customers by aligning with our current checked baggage deadline and the check-in policies followed by most other airlines.” This update aims to streamline the boarding process and allows gate agents more time to accommodate standby passengers.
Currently, international check-in times remain at one hour, but domestic travelers without checked bags will need to adjust their arrival plans accordingly. This change is part of a broader effort to standardize check-in procedures across the airline.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recommends passengers arrive at least two hours before their scheduled domestic flights and three hours for international flights. In addition, the newly implemented REAL ID requirement took effect on May 7, requiring travelers to present a REAL ID or another acceptable form of identification, such as a passport.
“Summer travel is upon us, and there is still time to get a REAL ID,” urged a TSA spokesperson. For those without an acceptable ID, they may face additional screening.
In anticipation of Memorial Day weekend, United Airlines expects to fly about 3.8 million passengers between May 22 and 28, representing an 8.5% increase from the same period last year.
